|evilpuppy56||04:04 pm - Sharks Sign Niemi!|
Sportsnet's Nick Kypreos has learned that goalie Antti Niemi will sign with the San Jose Sharks as early as Thursday.
Kypreos is reporting that the deal may be for one year with a $2 million base salary.
In winning the Stanley Cup last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, Niemi had a 26-7-4 record with a 2.25 GAA and seven shutouts.
The Blackhawks walked away from a $2.75 million arbitration to the 26-year-old goaltender in July.
Niemi earned $826,875 last season as a rookie. He played all but one period of Chicago's post-season run to the title, going 16-6 with a 2.63 goals-against average, .910 save percentage and two shutouts.

I'm dubious, given the Sharks' payroll predicament, but at the same time wouldn't be surprised. DW always talks about going and getting the best players available, and IMO, Niemi >> Greiss.
It'll be interesting to see the roster repercussions, if it does turn out to be true.
I don't think they signed Niemi just to sit on the bench - the problem is that we now have a $2M backup goalie when we still need more help on D...
